Schlernhaus
Schlernhaus is an historic inn, one of the first high mountain inns in the region. Originally built in 1885 (and expanded in 1908), this large inn projects a solid, lodge-like atmosphere with a beautiful soaring dining room and a number of small but functional bedrooms. It is, in many ways, a throw-back to earlier times. There is minimal heat (only in the dining room), and sitting high in the Alps at 2457 meters, it can get cold here, so bring a warm layer. There are indoor bathrooms, and cold water sinks in the hallway for washing up. The rooms have sheets and blankets, but there are no soap or towels provided. Bring your own. Hut slippers are available.
They now have a coin-operated hot shower for “as long as the hot water lasts”.
Breakfast is plentiful here. They have a tendency to bring out bread and jam first, leading you to believe that’s all you get, followed by much eating of bread and jam. Then they’ll bring a plate of meat and cheese quite a few minutes later. So have patience, drink some coffee and don’t rush through.
Things to do while at Schlernhaus? We recommend lingering, playing cards, reading a book, chatting with other hikers. This is a great place for it. Or sit around and watch the mountains. The Rosengarten (Catinaccio) are the handsome mountains to the southeast and are legendary for their reddish glow in the evening when the light is right.
Or hike up behind the hut toward the peak of Monte Pez. It’s only 350 feet elevation, so maybe 20 minutes, and is the top of the slope rather than anything strenuous. It is a scenic and beautiful spot. This is always a memorable stop on our Dolomites Traverse tours.
